JUNIOR STEELKINGS

The Sheffield Steelkings have always prided ourselves on welcoming people from all backgrounds. We have grown from humble beginning and with just a handful of players, to the biggest club in the British Para Ice Hockey League.

But we are alway looking to grow the club and the sport!

That’s why we want to be the first para ice hockey team in Britain to have a dedicated junior team training on a regular basis.

We know that building positive attitudes to sport and physical activity in children from an early age can help them to feel more motivated, confident and able to get active throughout their life. Especially those with a lower-body disability or impairment.

Every child or young person has the right to be active and benefit from doing so in a safe, positive and trusted environment, and to have an equal chance to achieve their potential.

Positive experiences at an early age help build the foundations for an active life.

If children and young people have experiences that feel fun, positive and give them a sense of confidence, they’re more likely to want to be active in the future.

It isn’t always easy to live an active life and we know that personal circumstances and wider socioeconomic factors make a significant difference.

But the future of our sport will rely on younger players finding it earlier and being in love for the game from a young age.

For now the Sheffield Steelkings are opening up specific Friday night training slots to allow juniors to get onto the ice and enjoy para ice hockey at their own pace.

Though open to any age, our aim is to find people with classifiable lower-body impairments that may one day not only compete in the British League, but also go to to represent Great Britain on the world stage.

Our Learn To Sledge sessions will have equipment available for those first starting out in the sport to borrow while they first start out.

In time, we will build the junior programme and organise youth specific training sessions.

Our aim over time is to lead by example. Then hopefully other teams in the British League will follow and para ice hockey will truly grow in this country.
