ABOUT US

Welcoming people from all backgrounds, the Sheffield Steelkings Para Ice Hockey Club compete in the British Para Ice Hockey League.

Established in September 2014, and with only a handful of players, the Steelkings were a small but determined team with the aim of competing against the other teams from around the UK in the (then) 2015 British Sledge Hockey League.

The Kings first competition on ice was a friendly game against the (then) Manchester Phoenix Sledge Hockey Club (now, Manchester Mayhem Para Ice Hockey Club). Due to a lack of players this game was played as 4-on-4 rather than the normal 5-on-5.

The experience of the Manchester team showed as the Steelkings were defeated 7-0. This however, made the Kings even more determined to be competitive. The aim; to grow the team, increase speed, improve skill and build strength.

The 2015 and 2016 seasons were still a big challenge for the team as they faced the more experienced competition throughout the league. However, with the addition of new members, improved coaching techniques and good old fashioned hard work, the Steelkings graduated from being the small group of friends who took on Manchester in December 2014, to a full and competitive Para Ice Hockey team.

In 2017 the Sheffield team took their first ever win in British Para Ice Hockey League competition and actually beat a travelling Manchester team 10-2 in front of a capacity crowd on IceSheffield’s Pad 2. What made this victory even more special was that the Steelkings were without both starting goalies.

Since that first win the Sheffield Steelkings have gone from strength to strength. Competing against international opponents, hosting their own Kings Cup competition, as well as completing the British Para Ice Hockey Grand Slam twice by winning both the British League and Playoff trophies in 2019 and 2025.

Following a two year gap after the 2019 season (due to Covid-19) the Steelkings returned to compete in the first ever Northwest Europe Para Ice Hockey League (NEPIHL), and came away crowned as the 2022 winners.

As Sheffield para ice hockey grew, so did the numbers, and for the 2022 British Para Ice Hockey League season the Steelkings entered two teams! Another first for the British game!

Now the Sheffield Steelkings A – ‘Kings’ and the Sheffield Steelkings B – ‘Stings’ (the club’s development ‘Bee’ Team),  both now compete for British Para Ice Hockey League glory.

In 2026 the club embarked on a new first and established a third team to the club. Following a grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery, the Sheffield Steelkings C -‘Clings’ team was formed as a place to bring para ice hockey to junior players.

The aim is to find and train the future stars of the game!

If you know someone who might like to discover the fantastic sport of para ice hockey, we would love to hear from them! And even if you just want to support us, we would love to see you down at the rink, to Defend The Kingdom with us!

Hail To The Kings!
